Why Live Laughter Beats The Algorithm
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The funniest part of comedy is supposed to be the laughter, not the analytics, but that’s not the world we’re working in anymore. We sit down with comedian Stephanie Robertson to talk about hitting her five-year mark in stand-up, what the comedy community gives you that the internet never can, and why the live room still tells the only truth that matters.
Stephanie shares what life looks like during a forced slowdown: moving back from Austin, Texas, staying in the suburbs, and losing access to her car for a week. That simple problem turns into long walks, heavy journaling, and a lot of clarity about momentum, creativity, and what you actually need to keep writing. We also get into her experience producing a weekly show at The Vixen in McHenry, dealing with regulars who know your act, and the constant push to keep evolving.
Then we go straight at the big modern headache: the social media algorithm. We talk Instagram Reels, TikTok, stand-up clips, retention time, and how editing for “the first two seconds” can distort a joke and chip away at creative integrity. We also unpack why huge follower counts still don’t guarantee ticket sales, and we debate the thin line between offensive jokes and comedic freedom through the Kevin Hart roast backlash. If you care about stand-up comedy, comedy clubs, marketing as a comedian, and building a career without selling your soul to metrics, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share this with a friend who lives online, and leave a review with your take on where the line should be.

Welcome Back And Guest Intro
SPEAKER_10Yo, what the deal is. We're now back at the Shits Podcast where we're either shooting the shit, starting some shit, or picking up a shit left off. I'm your host and DJ, DJ Monserr, the dopest DJ, and the dopest host you heard thus far. And I would like to welcome y'all back to Shits Podcast. Yo, um like I say all the time, we got a very special guest to the podcast. And this person is a very special guest to the podcast. This, like the third time she's been on, she's fucking hilarious. Um and I think that in these days and times that laughter is fucking needed. Like in with the shit that's going on in this world these days, laughter is fucking needed. And this young lady uh coming on to the podcast is the ideal person to provide that laughter. Uh, so with no further ado, I want you all to put it put your hands together for the one, the only Stephanie Robertson.
SPEAKER_01Y'all, what's up? Hey, how you feel? Good, dude. I'm happy to be back. It's I I was thinking about it. I was like, who saw me at one of like my first performances ever? Yeah, like so. I literally think like now it's been five years since I've been doing stand-up. Like I just hit my fear mark. Get the fuck out of here. I know, dude. I know that's why I was like, holy shit. It's been five years, maybe four, four, but like five, like in total.
SPEAKER_18It's been now awesome.
SPEAKER_10That is awesome.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't feel like it though, like at all.
SPEAKER_10That's the best part about it.
SPEAKER_01I know.
SPEAKER_10That's the best part is that it doesn't it it doesn't feel like someone, it's like a good marriage, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Right. It doesn't, it doesn't feel um, it doesn't feel like um so much of a struggle. Or like no, you're right, it's been good.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's been there have been tough tough times, but like overall, I mean, I met cool people like you along the way, and oh my god, you're good. Yeah, and um it's been it's been great. I mean, I'm I'm having a good time right now, so I'm um it's cool. It's cool to be back on this, and I don't know.
SPEAKER_10And you know what? The fun part is what matters the most. It's the experience.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01No, it's it's truly like, you know, uh I started doing stand-up because I I loved it. I like loved watching it, I loved comedy in general, and then uh, but I never I truly never thought it would become like so much my life in terms of like my social
Five Years Into Stand Up
SPEAKER_01life with like where I met all my favorite people. I my boyfriend now is in stand-up, and it's like it's just yeah, I know, I know. Ah, that's new, yeah, it is new, it is. Well, it's uh yeah, it's new, it's it's the newest update.
SPEAKER_10So um, I always like to ask the question um what what are you working on? And what I mean by what you're working on, I mean like what are you working on like mentally, what are you working on emotionally this week, not like projects, what are you working on?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I like that. Okay, I this is actually a grooming because my car is in the shop, so I'm just so I'm also a little backstory. I'm in the burbs right now. I just moved back to Austin, Texas. I don't know if you knew that about my device. Yeah, so uh with the boyfriend, I moved back, so we're back in at my dad's right now because we're just settling back in and saving up money. So I'm in the burbs where you can only go anywhere if you have a car. So I have no car right now this whole week. So I've I've just been taking walks and really trying to figure out myself like on a basis in terms of like getting places and uh killing time because it's like I have a car, I don't have a car, so like I I I'm I'm like I'll I'd usually go to the city or at least go into like the town up here and and maybe go to a coffee shop and like write and stuff. Like, no, I'm at home and money like that. So like I've been taking walks around the block, really thinking to myself. I've been journaling like crazy, and it I journal I don't do it to this extent, you know. Like I've I've hit a few pages, I'm like getting near the end of my journal, and I'm like, holy shit, it sucks. It's so crazy to not have a car, especially when you're in the suburbs, like it really sucks.
SPEAKER_10It sucks. So wait, so I mean, like, does does Lyft and Uber does that help?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they do, but but also I also being in the I wouldn't want I would if I wanted to go to the city, I would Lyft or Uber to the train station and then take the train. The Uber would be I live like an hour outside of the city right now. So so I could not I would not Uber into the city, it would cost me way too much money. And then uh and then to like go somewhere around here, I go, it's not worth the price of an Uber. There's nothing to do over out here. I'm like in the middle, I'm like in rural suburbia.
SPEAKER_10So there's no
No Car And Too Much Thinking
SPEAKER_10is it's it's no comedy clubs that like no.
SPEAKER_01The only thing the only thing I have here is the show that I've been running for I guess four years now, uh The Vixen over in McHenry. Uh it's where I produce my. And oddly enough, no show this week. So I I have enough going this week. It's crazy. It's like insane how little I have to, which is good because I don't need a car, I guess, but now I can't come up with anything to do. And like you were like, do the podcast. I was like, yeah, I'm gonna do from the comfort of my home. I can't leave it. I got nowhere to go. So the vixen was yesterday because they had a band, because it's a live entertainment venue. So they if they can get a band in it, they'll sell more money, or there's they'll sell more drinks to make more money, so they'll like kick my show out for the the week and then whatever, which is fine. I performing there every week is it's a lot, it's a lot because it's the same, it's the it's regulars, they're just like they're there every week, so I can't bullshit them. Like they know my act, they know me personally. Yeah, they've heard every riff every possibly come up with about the town. I mean, I've been doing it for four years weekly for four years, so it's like they're they're like, yeah, they're like, we don't care about you anymore. Like, who did you bring us? So they they only care about the rest of the lineup, which is great, and I love that. I love how many people are coming back every week, but it sucks for me. So I was like, good, let me take a week off because I don't I don't need to be there every week.
SPEAKER_10But I think that I think that it's commendable that you've been doing it for four years, like you gotta think about that shit. Some motherfuckers don't even keep jobs that long. You see what I'm saying? So for you to be able to continuously, you know, come up with material,
The Vixen Show And Regulars
SPEAKER_10modify the material for four years, that's that's pretty fucking dope. So yeah, I was just talking to um, I was just talking to my lady about this, right? And and I was thinking about I don't know about the comedic community, you know way more about that. So I know more about the music side of it and how that looks, and and we were just talking about like to me, I feel like it kind of it's kind of died down a little bit, right? It's not that much activity, yeah. Music. That's how yeah, what is it like for comedians? Like, how is that comedic community, you know what I'm saying? Like seeing the same people at different open mics and stuff like that, and and I used talking about building friendships with people like this, so yeah, kind of like walk us through that.
SPEAKER_01That's actually I was I was curious too about like your your group and your community because you guys were some of the first people I ever did shows for or around, because you guys would have comics go up before um uh you know the the music acts. And I was wondering about that because I I follow a bunch of you guys and I'm not seeing the live show promotion like I used to. And I'm like, what happened? I'm like, is it just because it's all online now and that's all you need?
SPEAKER_10Uh you know what? So it's it's interesting that you say that because my lady and I were having this discussion. I'm like, yeah, when I first started it, I was fucking geeked to try to open my anywhere. I felt like anywhere I was geeked to go do it, and it seems to me like I don't see that now, and like and and I do a weekly event every Wednesday, yeah, and you know, we get we can get people to come out, but I gotta be honest, it's not as much as it used to be. So I'm like, I don't know if days feel like all I have to do is get online, you get what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, do I mean so like yes, because the the there's a there's a lot of shh like it yes, comedy has to happen, especially for comedians. You have to go to open mics, you have to practice your material in front of people, whether it's just comedy comics, or you're enough to get a real stream. So that's I think that that's why we're able to still maintain that easy. But like for you guys, I feel like if you have a good enough song or a song that's ready enough, you can put it online and gauge uh uh without an audience. Like you can gauge how good the song is without a lens in front of you. I unless I'm totally wrong, but like for stand up, we need you to like hear laughter. And so we need to be in person with each other. So like the the comedy community, I think is like bumping right now. I think there's there's so many new cases coming in. Like there's a new, there's a whole new class of comics right now, starting their own shows, popping up in the suburbs, popping up in the city, like every anywhere and everywhere they can. And so it's good for us. We're we're good, we're alive and well. We're not well, but like we're we're and uh and then we have to also just stay at home some nights and and make clips and stuff, which that sucks, but that's a part of the game now. That's our online aspect. So we have to be live in front of people so that you tell a joke laughing at it, hopefully, and then you come home and you go, Oh, that's good enough, and then you can you put it online and make yourself look like an asshole and whatever and get mean comments, and I you know it's the circle of life for that that part of comedy now. It's unfortunate. You you literally you literally have to go out in public just so you can have retention online.
SPEAKER_10So to get to get the footage, right? Yep, so and and and I feel like this, I like that shit. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? Like, I like it, and maybe because I'm just I'm older and and I've you know what I'm saying, I've I've seen uh I've been infatuated with the punk movement and how it was in the bars and in the bars and lounges of New York and the early days of Chicago, going to the conclusion. So I just I I love the environment, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, um, so I just kind of feel like you should want to be a part of that shit, you know what I'm saying? That's just how I feel, yeah. Whether it's comedy or music, I feel like you should just want to be a part of it, and then especially like you said, to be able to get that that real-time response, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like that rush of laughter when you know that joke, it worked. You get what I'm saying? Yeah, no, totally.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I love I love being in the back of a room at a comedy club, hanging out with friends before a show, after a show. Like that that part means almost as much as it does to be on me, like those those moments, and then also watching your friends live. And yeah, and like watching watching my friends live is my favorite. I love watching some my my friend go up where I know their jokes, so I can tell what they're doing differently, or what they left out, or what they added, or what's new. Like, that's that's the best. And so yeah, I I hope it never goes away. I hope the live aspect part of it never goes away, because the inner the internet's doing a lot right now.
SPEAKER_10It's doing a lot you know what it's in and and and sometimes sometimes it's difficult for me to gauge if it's positive or negative,
Comedy Community Versus Music Scene
SPEAKER_10to be honest with you. It's kind of like down, like even when you think about the numbers, like you look at how many views people get, or how many likes people get, and it's like, oh, that's great. You got 9,000 likes, you know what I'm saying? But are they real? You know what I'm saying? Like, um, are the numbers real? Are the numbers fabricated? And does does that make you a better comic? Or does that make you a better, a better artist because of the numbers, you know what I'm saying? So I just kind of feel like I kind of feel like the internet is, in my opinion, kind of chipping away at the integrity and the purity of oh my god, a hundred percent.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like all of my ask any of my my zinc comedy the posting online is our least favorite part of it. It's it it gives you a a gauge of what people are interested in hearing about, maybe, but like you don't know what part of the video, like if I put out a a a minute long joke, you have no idea what part of the video they actually liked, where they laughed out loud at. Right if they when they I mean it's now showing you, I think the analytics on the video are showing you like when they like it, but like I'm still like, but why? And like what like if you laughed at it, like what kind of laugh? Like you know what I mean? Like how did you laugh, or what was it about my delivery? Like, I don't know, you don't know anything, so you're just like, I hope the algorithm fucking likes it. You don't even care about people like it now. You just hope the algorithm takes it and sends it off for it's it is, it's totally it's ruining a lot of integrity. And also, like I posted a clip recently that did very well, but it was soaked up, like so edited that I was like, the full version of this is not at it, doesn't like it changed my whole um I guess intention behind or uh I don't know what's the right word for it. Like in the video, I seemed like more of an asshole than than what was happening in real time on the show. And you can't like explain that to somebody while they're watching a the clip. Like you just have to like it's like such face value, it's like so whatever, it's so shallow, it's so like it's it's almost hack, honestly. It's almost hack to like have to post clips, but you have to like you have to now, or nobody that's a that's a part of the brine now.
SPEAKER_10I think it's fucked up, yeah. I mean, and and and I want to say this too that clip that you posted about the dad. That's the one thing you um uh so like I I actually looked at the analytics from a clip that I posted, right? And I think this hook it got like uh it got like eight, you know what I'm saying? Like eight thousand likes, it was like twenty one thousand views. So yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I'm looking at that shit like oh shit, like yeah, that's eight thousand likes, you know what I'm saying. If you think about it, if you had eight thousand motherfuckers outside ready to fuck you up, that's a that's a big number of people.
SPEAKER_02That's a scary amount, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_10So you like, oh shit, you know, it's gotta be dope. And I looked at the analytics and I'm like, how many like the the amount of seconds that they watch the whole video, and it's like, oh damn, you know, I know, oh I know, I can't looking at it hurts.
SPEAKER_01I go, oh, they just I they I lost their attention three seconds in, didn't even give me five seconds, right? Yeah, yeah. And when I was clipping up that that most recent video, the whole time I was clipping it up, I was like, okay, I know I have the the audience laughing, so I go, okay, it's funny. And then I was clipping it up in one version, and I go, it's too long, people will lose interest. So I cut I cut a part out, and then I like cut this middle part out that I really liked, but I go, it's not necessary for the sake of the algorithm and the I'm like I'm not even thinking about like the full context of the joke, literally only thinking about like what can I do to retain people's interest, then hope the algorithm hangs on to it and pushes it out because I retained enough people's interest in the first two seconds of the video. Like, God forbid, I don't have you in the first two seconds of a video. Right, it's the whole that's the everything you know. You just have to think about like what will the internet like to see, even if it's like not at all what the video is.
SPEAKER_10I don't like that. I don't I mean, I I feel like I don't like it at all. Like, I think for for for for show and tell, that's great, you know what I'm saying? Because you can always direct somebody to your page and be like, yeah, you know, I got 8,000 likes on this one, right? 20,000 views on this one, but it's like like the the um the reality of it though, you know what I'm saying? Like you wanna like you wanna you would love to see like I want to see how many of those 8,000 people like what part did they like, you know what I'm saying? Did you like the colors, you know what I'm saying? Right, like for real. You know what I'm saying? Did you like the colors? Did you like my outfit? Or what the fuck did you like about it? You know what I'm saying? So we were I was go ahead.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I was just I was talking about I was talking to my friends about this in my stand-up friends, and so apparently right now the algorithm does not like stand-up clips, they don't like the they don't the algorithm doesn't want to see you holding a microphone and having it shot like they like uh front-facing content of you just like looking into your phone and talking into your phone, and so a bunch of my friends are trying to make those right now, and some of them are really bad and not all like don't have the guts right now to make them because I they cringe. I cringe at myself watching stand-up. I'm not gonna be able to just like look into the camera and talk so so but we were Tyler about that, and we were like, you know what? Comics gotta do what they gotta do. Your front-facing videos are none of my business. Like I I will, I will, I I said I'll like it, I'll move the fuck on. I go, I have not I have no business, no business judging those. I'll watch them for your sake. If I if you're my friend, I'll watch and I'll like, but I go, whatever your content is, it's none of my business. I don't like none of my business because they're just so embarrassing, and you have you're you're like we're like forced into doing them right now for the sake of getting views.
SPEAKER_10It's icky, I feel like it's really icky. It sucks. I feel like it fucking sucks. It does to me, I feel like to me, I feel like it takes away from the talent of the
SPEAKER_01of the of the of the the the um the the comic i think it takes away from the talent of the comic because and i mean from the comic from the from the rapper from the singer all that i think it takes away from because now like you said we're focusing on the algorithm yeah you know what i'm saying like yeah that ain't a real person you know i know like i could see if it was like some fat motherfucker somewhere named algorithm i don't know it's just you know that this motherfucker just dictated everything that was going on and you just had the you you had to say the right jokes to this motherfucker you know i'm saying or you had a but with shit it's like i know it's right right no it's insane i don't it sucks we like we have to bow bow down to the algorithm sucks you know what i'm saying yeah and they and there are so many comics in chicago alone that just don't post their clips so they'll never no one will ever know about them ever or and clo are expect not not really in chicago there's not industry in chicago but clubs like in new y expect you to have a certain amount of followers and you have to have a certain amount of followers to be like you're losing out on funny people if if that's the way your club is gonna run you're losing out on a huge group of the funniest people and it sucks because it's a motherfucker out there it's a motherfucker out there that's not tech savvy and probably probably got a bullshit ass Android ass android for sure yeah you know saying and they just don't the uh yeah the you know the the motherfuckers with the with the newest iPhone and shit like that so it's kind of like yeah editing editing a camera editing uh equipment that's all money that's expensive and like you did not you did not have to have equipment literally 10 years ago literally five years before i started because i know i started in 2021 so like these comics before me are like what are we bringing a camera to the club tonight and i'm like you have to you have to yeah you have to do that yeah it's it's it's well you gotta have a motherfucker what go ahead oh you well you gotta have somebody on phone like recording every fucking thing that you say different angles and shit like you know yeah um I think it's I think it's trash it is trash it's trash and I hope people just keep coming out to live shows and enjoy it that way but they're not gonna come out to live shows unless they can see you online first and assess you that way and then like a great example is my boyfriend right now he has 500 over 500 000 followers on Instagram and he's still figuring out how to sell tickets because these people on it because he does the front facing videos and that's how he he's popped off I mean he was a stand up first and he's an incredible stand-up but he got popular from doing these stupid front facing videos and most people who follow him have no idea he's a great standup no clue that he does stand up they have only follow him for his online content and so he's like I have 500 000 followers and I can't sell out my shows like how like how the you know and it's because that shit that rhythm has ruined him it's helped him at the same time it's it's insane they have no idea they go I didn't even know he did stand up he's they I'll see him where we do shows together I'll feature for him they'll come up to him at the end of the show and be like I didn't know you were so good at standup how long have you been doing this he's like I start that's where I got my start he's like I didn't just start making videos on the internet and and they're like oh well wow and then the or some of them are like this is this is the first comedy show I've ever been to is this how they all are and I'm I'm like no but yeah like I don't know what you mean by that yeah it's it's and I just I just think like it's no I was just gonna say crazy to see people like learn how comedy works in real time because it's just so internet focused live comedy works in real time I guess yeah and and like so I feel like definitely technology yeah can can help you know what I'm saying like supposed to disappoint um either we just start abusing it or we just got really fucking lazy you know I'm saying yeah so and we just start relying on it like I was just talking to a really good friend of mine uh named race race bandit and he he made a good point he was like you know people nowadays they think that marketing and promoting is simply going online or on your on your page and posting the flyer and it's like then you think like oh that should be it you know I'm saying I got 5000 followers so I at least should get 20 000 people to come out because everybody's seeing it no motherfucking they're not they're not seeing it no they're not and it's and I think like I think it's wrong I think it's wrong because why the fuck do I have all these goddamn followers then they can't see it what's yeah yeah you know like somebody need to me I feel like that like how is it that I have all these followers but they everybody doesn't see what the fuck I'm posting how I I fully agree and I I don't know either I it's it's I so I noticed also this is a thing with Instagram right now that I've been picking up on by just like reading other people's like like on threads and stuff like people be posting about how upset they're they are at Instagram because of the way they keep changing algorithm and like pushing to people what they're not pushing to people. And uh it's uh it seems that Instagram is pushing a lot more content that you don't follow. So so like back back when I first started stand up I had a thousand followers 2000 followers maybe and I would get like 600 likes on a photo which is huge back then and now I have 8,000 something followers and I'll only get 200 likes 150 likes and I'm like how that the ratio makes no sense if I have more followers but I'm getting less interaction less likes on my my photos my photos alone I'm like how like how does that how does that make any sense and it's because they're just not pushing content anymore or the the algorithm's doing something with the content that's not in our favor. It's not in our favor at all.
SPEAKER_10Yeah and I uh I don't appreciate it because because I look at it like this I'm gonna be honest with you I feel like if I have 5000 fucking followers I think it's ideal for me to be able to go on my page and be like if y'all fuck with me all I need is a dollar for one for one a dollar. I mean like y'all literally like throwing dollars away cash me a dollar really I should be straight right there you know if all of these 50 000 people that fuck with me just send me one fucking dollar yep I would be cool anybody would be cool but I think that and it's just me thinking like outside the box plus we're in the Trump administration so I don't trust shit no more you know what I'm saying I just kind of feel like motherfuckers know that that's possible they know they know that it's possible so they're not gonna give you access also these 500 000 followers that you have like you really don't have them you get what I'm saying yeah yes so yeah I think it's fucked up it is fucked up everything's fucked up everything about it everything all online everything it's all fucked up because it's not real no no it does not translate to real life absolutely not no not at all it's it's it's truly like a virtual game it's a virtual game and and followers are just like the coins you have in the game and they'll help you online but then you go out in life and no one no one gives a fuck
Clips Editing And Algorithm Pressure
SPEAKER_10nobody gives a fuck you'll be surprised how many times I've gone out somewhere and I'm like I'm like standing right next to a motherfucker yeah that I'm friends with.
SPEAKER_01No clip and it's like you look you look at the motherfucker like they look familiar like yes I I do this I do this thing now in real life where if I have any inclination that I might know them or that they we might follow each other I just reintroduce myself I go I I go I'm Stephanie I just I'm just you know I'm just I just say hi again and and they go yeah no I know and I go I think we follow each other I don't know but I just want to I'm gonna say hi just because I don't know like I I just get it out of the way immediately now because I don't want that awkward interaction and then you're like you're like asking other people around you like who are they and then you have to like look them up online really quick you're like oh fuck fuck I'm like we've messaged I've liked their stuff they've liked my stuff no idea right it's right happy birthday and shit like why do I know their dog every day right I asked about that dog every fucking day I'm standing right next to that that's crazy it's it's it's fucked up so I want to ask this question espe especially in in today's climate is do you think there is a thinner line between offensive jokes and comedic freedom that's tough um man the I uh so right and I mean the Kevin Hart roast have did you watch that no I watched it I I watched it and I'm gonna be honest with you I lost respect I lost respect for him yeah well yeah I love I lost respect and the thing is I don't want to just put it I don't want to just put it solely on him however I feel
Followers Do Not Equal Real Life
SPEAKER_01like it's you get what I'm saying right it's it's your roast and you're the motherfucker that Netflix sought out for this so I'm pretty I would think I would think that you had you had to you have to have some say so and what was being said so that means somewhere along the lines you heard these jokes and you were cool with them you know yeah 100% that is why I asked that I mean don't get me wrong like I've heard some i i i I've heard some jokes that be that can be considered a tad bit yeah racist yeah but i fucking laughed yeah but they wasn't but they wasn't like offensive they weren't like super offensive it was kind of like uh damn yeah 70s or right right right you know what i'm saying yeah no totally there was there was a lot wrong with the roast in particular i watched the whole i i wasn't honestly even interested in watching it until i saw all the controversy and i go okay like i go is the internet just blowing this out of proportion because that's what the internet does and like do people really care like what like what is this and i well a uh a roast joke roast rule that everyone should live by and this is jeff ross says it all the old roasters say it is you roast the ones you love so I don't know why Kevin had a bunch of just random ass people on that may or may not love him or even hang out like one-on-one with black people like you know what I mean like that's all what are you on this like why do we have what like Tony Henscliffe for example I highly doubt him and Tony are friends in real life I highly doubt it if they are then I'm wrong but like I've lived in Austin and my boyfriend looked at the mother show never he never saw Kevin Hart hanging out they he never heard nobody nobody Kevin Hart is on a completely other level from Tony Henccliffe and so and then and so I think they only had Tony on because he's just popular right now and he's like known like the roast guy and but that but he shouldn't have been on not Kevin's friend like he's not any of the that's that's that's the point he's not friends with anybody on that road with Shane I think that's it. I think like close friends Shane that's the only person he's friends with. So no he should not have been roasting those other people he should not like he shouldn't have been Kevin they had too many people no reason other than they might have hype right now I don't know. Right that's the that's where they went wrong to begin with like that's where you've you do not roast the ones you don't love. Like it's because then it'll come out as hate. It'll come out as I'm just trying to find a racist joke or like a joke that it like leans racist but like has something to do with about them a little bit like that's that's I think that's why all those jokes came out that way really they didn't know each other they didn't like each other don't roast somebody you don't like that's fucking like because I gave like I gave it a chance I was like well let me let me check it out you know I'm saying and I see the people that were on yeah I was like like you said this motherfucker probably don't hang out with this dude you get what I'm saying and and so that was one that was one thing another thing it was like uh it's most likely it's writers that's yes coming up with these jokes as well a hundred percent a hundred percent so the question is it's like what type of writers do you have you know what I'm saying like because I would think that if you're roasting a black comedian you probably should have writers that's gonna try to come up with jokes that's funny for not only for that black comedian but for that black comedian's audience yeah you get what I'm saying so that's why I kind of looked at that roast I'm like damn this shit was disrespectful on so many levels man you know I'm saying no it was fully whitewashed the reason why it made me yeah you know and and it kind of made me really um kind of lose respect for Kevin because I'm kind of like damn did you just do this for the money you know I'm saying like yeah and because I and this is how this I think of the the George Floyd joke was made which I thought was fucking horrible you know I'm saying I think that for any motherfucker that laughed at that joke you need your ass whooped um yeah it is really it really made me think that you couldn't it's nowhere in hell in today's society it's nowhere in hell you can make a joke of that caliber about a gay person or a Jewish person would be fucking canceled immediately but it was like it was acceptable to make the joke about the black man because the fucking black comedian who we roasting he green lighted it you get what I'm saying you heard that fucking joke bro like you can't you can't say that they sprung this shit up on you no yeah no he you're 100% wait say that again like is there a line is there a thinner line in today's car yeah yeah I yeah I do think there is a thinner line especially if you're gonna talk about like um people I mean people have lost jobs recently and because they said something wrong online. Uh but in in terms of a roast joke I think people need to realize that you like can't just use a joke to get away with racism if that makes sense. And I think that's a lot of what they were do they're like oh the punchline is that this is just a it's a racist joke. It has nothing to do with Kevin on a personal level it has nothing to do with any of the other panelists on a personal level it's just like straight up black just black black like just just black African American black like that's all that the joke has anything to do with it has nothing to do with Kevin. You know what I mean? And I think that's where that thin that thin line gets thinner uh in today's society especially like you like you have to keep it so person you have to be more personal about the roast and less about the general race of people which is crazy it's crazy. And you know what actually I don't know I don't know how you feel about her but I thought Cheryl Underwood was incredible. She was incredible and um I think you could tell that Kevin Hart really liked her jokes uh because like there was a lot I mean Kevin was faking a lot of that laughter. You could just tell he was like that's crazy. But then when Cheryl went up he was like telling her he's like no no say say it say it. Like you could tell he was actually having fun with her and she I mean what kind of bums me out is that I feel like she she was overlooked almost with with how great she did because of all of the other controversy between like Tony and Chelsea Hanler and uh Shane to like I was like give her her her flowers I thought she did incredible and she stayed in her voice doing it too like because it wasn't super formulaic it was just like almost it felt so like natural and organic coming from her and and you could tell I I thought you could tell Kevin like sincerely liked it compared to all the other bullshit that he had to sit through I don't know my opinion yeah I thought she was great and her jokes weren't dumb and offensive like the other ones were I agree at least I'm an offensive I don't know I think I thought to her I thought her whole set was fantastic another thing too that kind of really had me kind of like scratching my head is it seems like I don't I don't I don't know if this is the evolution of comedy so that's really why I want to talk to you too but it's like someone's dead significant other become part of the joke.
SPEAKER_10Right.
SPEAKER_01Why right why was he catching so many strays it he's not there stop just making her feel bad about having a dead husband like crazy crazy I know I thought that too I was like that's a lot of strays like I've done roast battle Chicago which is similar but it's just one-on-one back and forth and boy I say who was not not in the room she had jokes about him and I was just like I'm like what about me? You're roasting me you're not roasting him right you have to say something with me involved in it if you're gonna roast my relationship I guess roast the relationship don't roast him and it's very yeah it's and then the audience also has no fucking clue. I mean it
SPEAKER_10my case he had they had no clue who he is or what he looks like so like she bombed she like she she she failed I'm like yeah you have to road me don't why is anybody else catching strays on this stage other than me you know yeah I I just feel like is is is that um is is that a lack of is that a lack of creativity is it a lack of the reach of yeah of yeah you know I'm saying like did you did you do the like you did the research on this lady's dead husband but you couldn't have did the research on anything else you know I'm saying because I mean she's not the the best looking motherfucker so you you you had all that ammunition right there you know I'm saying right you could have talked about a motherfucker's career all types that's kind of felt like that was fucked up and then even when uh Regina Hall said that she was channeling um Kevin R's dead mom I'm like wait goddamn so the deceased uh uh like they they not off limits no more that's crazy I know I don't know it's it's really tough I mean that whole I mean you could dissect that whole roast for forever because there was a lot of things that were just like whoa like we are taking it there now I don't know if they wanted that shock factor for the views because the roasts are kind of I don't I mean the roast used to be such a big thing and thing on Comedy Central at least when when it was on comedy central I think maybe Netflix is just trying to pull shit out of their ass because Netflix is doing everything right there Netflix is about to make shorts like reels like on the Netflix app. And I go why do we need that we don't need more we need to stop doing real so I don't I think I have a feeling Netflix was just like also that's actually everybody on that roast everybody on that roast kept saying I don't know Netflix is paying me oh well Netflix is paying me I'm I'm paid to be so I think that was another like icky element to to the whole thing they just kept breaking and being like well I'm I'm sorry I'm I'm saying this I'm getting paid I'm getting paid I'm gonna say this and that's like a whole other thing where you well then you should not be roasting someone just because you're getting paid to be their friend be there and also Kevin Hart has been roasted before this is his second roast why did we need to do this again like maybe and maybe that's why they're they were so weird because they ran out of the first joke batch of jokes from the first roast I don't know yeah that that that was like it is felt it felt so weird and shit really even even with the with with his with his this bromance with the rock that shit felt fucking creepy too you know what I'm saying like the second nipple like which part is which part of that is fucking funny you know what I'm saying no I felt like I felt like y'all just kind of got comfortable in the shit that y'all do and the privacy of y'all homes y'all just let out on stage that's what it kind of seemed like you get what I'm saying yeah so there's a lack of um like showmanship and performance these days I feel like like there's like the the professionalism of what a roast could and should be because if you if you look back on any of the comedy Central roast even the Tom Brady roast the other year those were way more put together way more authentic and you could tell people wanted to be there and it was actually good clean fun good and dirty fun and uh they had this Netflix this one was uh this
Kevin Hart Roast And Offensive Lines
SPEAKER_10one was uh sloppy it was it was too much it was too long too it was like three hours wasn't it like two and two and a second they did they did too much they did they just had yeah and it was like motherfuckers up there that wasn't funny like you got draymon grain like what the fuck is Draymond Graham that's what I'm saying though I'm like they they literally just like had people up there for the sake of maybe of them like I don't it seemed like the right choices it it all it just seems it's slop and today they just threw a bunch of people people together and Kevin Hart yeah says I mean that's one thing that they roast him about is he says yes to everything and he should probably stop soon he's he needs to chill out yeah he had his heyday I used to love Kevin Hart growing up oh my god I would watch his special uh seriously funny and the two other after that I used to watch him all the time and now I could I don't he my mind ever yeah it's hard it's hard and it it and it really makes me think about um it really makes me think make me think about the the the price that people have like so you know there's a saying that says everybody has a price and so that can be that can be kind of enlightening to depends on who you are or it can be fucking scary you know I'm saying because it makes you think that what is your price you know what I'm saying because it's it's things that people may feel like well I'll never do that unless unless yeah unless can it pay for my child's college tuition then maybe you know like yeah people well and that's another thing though too people were people were on the roast being like I'm here because they paid me but then they were calling out the comics that went to the Ryda uh Raya comedy festival which was like completely against everything that most of the comics believe in but they did it because it paid them enough so it's like yeah we're all doing stuff we're all doing stuff because we're getting paid none of you want to be on this on this on this roast panel so why do you say yes money so how are you gonna roast somebody else for doing something for money that's fucking crazy it's it's fucking crazy and like to me like it it it is make it makes me think about how I guess it it's it seems like the end game is to get paid right I guess that's what it is but I don't think that's what it should be no you get what I'm saying like maybe I'm naive you know I'm saying like I feel like if if you're an artist you're supposed to be doing it because you're passionate about your art like I heard you speak about you love stand up so to me it would seem like that's gonna you're gonna navigate a certain way yeah due to your passion for stand up not due to your passion to get paid off stand up but yeah because you love stand up yeah I I mean I I and it is I don't know I'm sorry I was just gonna say like there have been gigs that I've been offered to do in terms of like like just like local nothing no big deal gigs but I knew I wasn't right for them like for the offer what they so I will call my friend who I know is right for them and I'll give them the gig because I just go no because I don't want to show up and provide something that isn't right for the show or like perform or also I don't want to bomb and I know I'm gonna bomb at this show because the audience isn't for me.
SPEAKER_01It's a it's a bunch of like old people who just don't do not want to hear you know about my dating life or whatever. And so like there for example I got reached out for for a high school over in Antioch and uh and they're like we need the set to be clean we need this we need that and I go and at the time this was like two years ago now at the time I was like I have a clean enough thing to a high school I don't feel confident doing that. I don't want to get anybody in trouble. So I hired I hired I I reached out to two comics who I knew would do it and it would be great and it would be perfect. And they've been asked back every single year now. And the the the woman who reached out to me like couldn't have been happier. So it's like yeah I'm not gonna take a gig just because it's money and it was it was good money. I felt I was like damn I got to clean up my act I gotta I gotta figure out how to get in there next year. I didn't even think about that until I just saying it now but like maybe I should reach out to her soon because I'd you have a little bit of a cleaner act uh but yeah I'm like I'm not gonna I'm not gonna do like a a a shitty gig or a gig that isn't right for me. At least I don't know not yet I'm not money hungry enough yet so I don't want to I don't want to I feel too weird in those situations. I don't feel confident in myself you know um there this feature also or this feature this other comic wanted to book me for a a show way up north in Wisconsin it's like a very rural area older people and I just know they don't fuck with my style of comedy and he goes do you want a headline we can give you this amount of money or feature and I asked him what the demographic was like and I go no I'm not gonna headline that room that's not that's not right for me to headline for that room I'm gonna I'm gonna hurt your business because it's his show and I want people to return to his show. So I'll feature I'll do 15 minutes instead of 30 minutes and then you know hopefully if I bomb or whatever the headliner can clean it up but like no I'm not gonna do that to your show. Like no I just I won't so I think people need to like kind of focus in on that a little more because there's a lot of comics out here saying yes to gigs that they shouldn't and it's bad it's bad for the whole the whole ecosystem I go great now people aren't gonna return to the show because that's what they think this is. It's one thing to bomb and just like there's nothing you can do about it. A showcase is a showcase whatever but if you're asked specifically for a certain part in the show then you get you got to figure you should you should know better.
SPEAKER_10You should know where your strengths lie you know you should I feel like you should be I feel like you should be better prepared. Yeah you know I'm saying like then it it to me to to me that that that would show um a certain level of professionalism that you have. Right.
SPEAKER_01Like yes if I had if I had time to prepare for a show up north in Wisconsin then maybe I can figure out a set or a version of my set that'll work. And I've done that before but like 30 minutes I know I don't have 30 minutes of the material that they're looking for. I have 15 for sure. You know what I mean? So like yes I fully agree. And there have been there have been people who just take up shows or they just go I'm just in it for the money and then they are bombing on every show and then guess what? They don't get booked anymore because people see right through that shit. I mean they do they go why did you come here and not take this seriously or why did you come here and just like obviously do a set at this crap it's called you have to read the room as a comic and so that's like a part of your job. And if you're not if you're just if you're just there for the paycheck you're not you you don't give a fuck about re reading the room. You don't even most of those people who do that don't even realize they they're bombing they go that's great.
SPEAKER_10No they go whatever all right see you at the next gig yeah that's what you think buddy yeah right um well I'm not gonna hold your time it's it's precious and I'm glad we were able to get to fit this in it's kind of late especially for my oh my gosh I want myself but the I want to do this before we get up out of here hold on okay this is the game portion of the show and this segment this game is called Bitch I got options so the reason why it's called that this basically multiple choice of the student and uh multiple choice I don't know all of this works better for
Money Versus Craft And Professionalism
SPEAKER_10me. I don't think to do the essay okay gotcha so the way this works we have scenarios uh got four options and you just choose which one fits fits the best okay okay uh okay in the 80s which was most likely sexier to women okay in the 80s a a dope dealer b a very smart guy at the lead or D the dude that knew all the dance steps to throw I think D okay okay cool cool cool all right on average on average what does the average kid do when the Jehovah's Witnesses come to their door a open the door B turn off the TV and hide tell them to come back when their mom get home or D go get their Bible and prepare to debate this is the average dude the average the average average kid the average kid uh hide hide absolutely hide okay there you go there you go there you go okay um in the shower what is the most neglected body area is it a b behind your knee c in between the toes or D the navel oh my god those could all be options the most neglected I think I think the navel you might be right not judging you not not judging you all I'm like not mine mine is perfect I clean it every day oh my god okay um okay hold up hold up okay if it's his wallet stolen at the gym while he's playing basketball who is most likely to have stolen it is it A one of his uh opponents B a weak ass player who didn't get picked C a teammate that he didn't pass the ball to or D the person trying to help him find it the person trying to help him find it all right uh um last one what is the worst thing to say before three so a I just took my last dose B is this the best we could do C I guess this could be sexy or D let me take a shit first I think oh man it's between medication and shit uh I'm like which one's worse because I mean I guess they just have their last dose so they're fine but that's shit that's that's that's shit definitely go shower now go wash up real quick don't forget the navel too don't forget your belly button I guess I guess we're forgetting about those things in the shower now uh I think the shit would be worse yeah yeah yeah I think so it'd be too friends all right yo I would like to thank my very special guest Stephanie Robinson for participating in the game you will only hear that this podcast you hear it anywhere else out the ass and they did it once more we're in here yo Stephanie I really do appreciate your time it's always a fucking pleasure I I want to say this with all sincerity and I'm glad you had brought this up and you said five years you've been doing comedy I feel very honored to have watched you mean pause uh to have watched your and comedy real shit like every time every time I see a clip it it's like you're more precise more on point uh the the c
